South American death and doom band Sporae Autem Yuggoth offer their debut full-length album, However It Still Moves.
Formed in Talagante, Chile, in 2019, Sporae Autem Yuggoth is a doom band that employs death metal tactics to arrest and defeat the entranced. Suitable for the grave and beyond, these dark and sinister songs lay on you like a heavy cloak, resisting removal. Listening to the music is like being on a dark path and then deciding to turn down an even darker one. According to The Metal Archives, the band is Alexis Gutiérrez (bass), Diego Guzman (drums), José Gallardo guitar), Patricio Araya (vocals), and Johanna Sánchez (keys).
The new album is long, with eight tracks, four of which run ten minutes or more. “Apparition of Internal Odes” starts it all, groaning slowly to life accompanied by a tolling bell that certainly sounds like a warning that the dead have risen. Vocalizations are first heard more than two minutes in – time is being taken to build mood and dread in the dooming atmosphere. Grim and slow, this song is a creeping horror. In the second half, the tempo picks up and the death metal rears its snarling head. “The Pendulum of Necropath” has the quiet, eerie passage in the middle, placed there for impact after softening you up with an initial barrage. The closing movements are vigorous. The second long piece is “Colosus Larvae: The Crimson Coffin & The Scarlet Worm,” and it is a story of the ancient and the foul. Grim and tortuous.
Once you start this album you will not be able to stop, so prepare yourself for the long haul. Keep a lookout for “Disintegration,” a song that was released in advance to whip up interest in the record and one that makes a lasting impression. “Disguise The Odius Spirits” was the most sorrowful to me, and “Through Dominion To Interlude” the dreariest, with permanently haunting guitars. This album deserves to be heard far and wide. Recommended.
